Increasing retention capabilities and reacting to floods and droughts in lowland forest ecosystems

Brzózka Sub-district was involved in a project "Increasing Retention Capabilities and Reacting to Floods and Droughts in Lowland Forest Ecosystems" as part of the Third Priority of Infrastructure and Environment Operating System.

Building two dams and a water gate in Bonków Sub-district aimed at hydrating a vast idle-land (over 10 ha) and retention on lands of lowered surface water levels (former swampy areas).
Construction of three land dams and one water gate allowed building a storage reservoir on the already existing watercourse which has a form of a shallow overflow area of raising height over 1 meter and 1.2 ha of area.

Location of tasks was to bring the following results:

  • Improvement of water ratio of the forest district through increased retention of water supplies.
  • Delay of rainwater outflow
  • Enriching local environment by providing conditions for nesting wetland birds
  • Enriching local environment with a waterhole for fauna inhabiting the area.

Implementation of tasks has brought measurable benefits: increasing water stock in forest settlements and restoring downgraded water and muddy ecosystems.
